What is an indefinite suspension of Greek activities?
President John Thrasher has imposed an indefinite interim suspension on all fraternities and sororities at Florida State University effective immediately on November 6, 2017.
Why is this happening?
Our Florida State Fraternity and Sorority Life community continues to face difficult challenges related to the health and well-being of our students. The action follows the death of Andrew Coffey, a pledge of Pi Kappa Phi, who was found unresponsive after attending a party and the arrest of a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity charged with the sale and trafficking of cocaine.
What does this mean?
All activities for Greek organizations and governing councils are prohibited until further notice.
How does this impact my chapter events?
All chapter activities are prohibited until further notice including chapter meetings, elections, social events, philanthropy.
What about initiation and intake?
At this time, there should be no new member/aspirant activities. Chapter presidents should work with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to obtain these exceptions. Only organizations needing to hold initiation/crossing ceremonies and events should make this request of OFSL.

How does this impact Homecoming?
At this time, organizations should not have any activities, including Homecoming preparation such as pomping, skit night, or spear-it night.
How long will this last?
President Thrasher announced an indefinite interim suspension. President Thrasher stated, “For this suspension to end there will need to be a new normal for Greek Life at the university. There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it.”

The Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority life want to work with you to improve the Greek experience.
