Q: What are the benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority.
A: Joining a fraternity or sorority is a commitment to lifelong learning and growth through a network of individuals who believe in the values set forth by each organization. During the collegiate experience a fraternity or sorority provides a student with a group of peers who exposes your student to a variety of leadership and service opportunities on campus, so that he or she can develop career and life skills outside of the classroom. Additionally, lifelong connections and bonds are formed through fraternity and sorority membership. The (inter) national structure of Greek organizations provides an extensive alumni network across the country to provide support and friendship well beyond the college years.
Q: What is the time commitment?
A: The time commitments vary based on the organization and the level of involvement your students seeks during membership. Students can be expected to participate in consistent chapter meetings, philanthropic and service events, in addition to required meetings and ritual ceremonies. Time management is a key skill to develop when joining and continuing through the fraternity/sorority experience. Many students also find time to balance their involvement with a part-time job or internship.
Q: How will membership affect my student(s) academic performance?
A: The Greek community continues to place scholarship as its highest priority. Each semester the community consistently maintains a grade point average. Students can expect that each organization has a minimum grade point average to join the organization and maintains one’s membership. Each organization also provides academic support to those members who are at risk with their academics.
Q: What are the financial obligations of joining?
A: Membership in a fraternity or sorority does not come without a financial commitment. Much like a small business, the dues your student is expected to make towards the organization will help fund the daily operations of the chapter.
Q: What is my role as a family member?
A: We view family members as another support system for their student(s). One of the key components for the support is empowering students as they navigate the Greek experience. Encourage your student to gather as much information as possible before they make the decision to join a Greek organization. It is important that you discuss financial obligations and the time commitment before your student enters a recruitment/rush/intake process with a fraternity or sorority. This will be an exciting time of new experiences in your student’s life and your support will be invaluable.
Q: How does the Office of Fraternity and Sorority handle hazing?
A: The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is aligned with the belief of Florida State Unviersity which states, “we believe students should not be demeaned or exposed to harm when pursuing involvement in campus life”. Parents are a partner in helping identifying potential issues and incidents. If you or your students feels that hazing is occurring, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
